Deciding to buy (password protected)
Having moved in, we set about making some big changes. We chose to have:
Front garden
The biggest change at the moment is the front garden. It started off as a huge patch of gravel with a paved area in the centre. The decision was made was that had to go and be replaced by lawn. The downside is that the paved section was so well cemented in, it would be costly to remove it.
Decisions:
- Advertise the gravel free for collection on the local gardening group Facebook page.
- Leave the paved area in place.
- Have the rest of the area turfed, with the exception of two long sections for borders.
- Get a focal point for the paved area.
- Plant the borders up with fragrant cottage style planting.
Progress so far:
- We managed to shift about FIVE tonne of gravel. The rest will be reused in the back garden/veg patch.
- No problem.
- The rest of the area is turfed with two defined border sections.
- Sun dial focal point in place on paved area.
- One border planted out and starting to get established.
Still to do:
Fill four planters with spring bulbs, then summer flowering border plants and put around the sun dial. Plant up second border.
The gravel from the front garden removed and replaced with grass, borders and a central feature area.

Spot the changes

And after sitting back we thought about a blind donation to Roger’s old school regarding naming a kitchen at Tradescant House part of The King’s School Canterbury

But even more exiting is the history to which I am attached and now have my name attached to the history of Tradescant House (where Roger boarded) for posterity. Saint Augustine’s Abbey. So it is called “Joanne’s Kitchen”. The King’s School Housemaster is now mentioning my kitchen quite a bit in the evening Roll Call as “someone” keeps leaving the toast in the toaster a little too long hence frequent fire drills.

Tradescant
The house welcomed back OKS John Hamlin,
who reminisced about his times in the house
and viewed the dorm that bears his name.
And after a ‘Name the Kitchen’ charity event,
Roger Crabtree named a kitchen in the house
‘Joanne’s Kitchen’ in honour of his wife and
made a donation to the House Charity. Also,
Jonathan Pearse paid a visit to see the house
that bore for him so many memories.

And we had to pop down.

And the next thing we wanted was the driveway to be repaired. This was undertaken by Michael Linton from https://www.facebook.com/HelpingtobuildyourEmpire. Very impressed.
